HUNTINGTON, NY –Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern (D-Huntington) 16th LD, participated in the 3rd Annual Half Hollow Hills (HHH) Relay For Life and presented proclamations to Debbie Picker and Pam Schwartz, co-chairs of the event and Dr. Sheree Givre, who coordinated the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention study (CPS-3). Legislator Stern also presented proclamations to Alessandro Malito, an HHH High School West student journalist, who reported on Relay For Life for the Long Islander newspaper and to Rebecca Cook, Eliana Givre, Megan McCune, Alana Siev and Lindsay Sperin, 10th grade volunteers who devoted considerable time, energy and enthusiasm to ensure the success of Relay For Life. Relay for Life is an annual event designed to raise funds for cancer research, raise awareness and the spirits of those battling cancer. To date HHH Relay For Life has raised more than $600,000 for this important cause. This year’s Relay For Life included community participation in the CPS-3 study, which aims to better understand the lifestyle, behavioral, environmental and genetic factors that may cause or prevent cancer. Legislator Stern was a study participant and noted, “This study is crucially important to our community because it can help determine how our environment may play a role in certain types of cancers. This event represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported and one day, cancer will be eradicated. I was proud to participate in this event and I commend the entire community for coming together for this important cause.” |
