Suffolk County Legislature

TOURS OF THE LEGISLATURE

Tours of the Suffolk County Legislature are held upon request.  We welcome schools, Boy and Girl Scout troops, and other organizations or groups wishing to learn more about how the Suffolk County Legislature works.

The agenda for a guided tour usually includes a walk through the Legislative building in Hauppauge with stops in each division of the Legislature: the Presiding Officer’s office, the Legislative Clerk’s office, the Office of Budget Review and the Legislative Counsel’s office.

If time permits, the most popular part of the tour is the Mock Legislative Meeting where visitors learn some of what goes on behind the scenes during legislative sessions. Participants are given the opportunity to sit behind the horseshoe in the Legislative Auditorium, where they actually hold a discussion using the Legislators’ microphones then debate and vote on a proposed bill placed before them.

Mock meeting exercises truly engage the participants and give them a taste of government in action.  In many instances, if tours are planned well in advance, your Legislator may even be available to join in the fun.  If you are interested in scheduling a tour, please call Meghan O’Reilly at 631-853-4861.
