Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory
Welcome to the official website of the Suffolk County Legislature.
I am deeply honored to have been re-elected to a fourth term as Presiding Officer by my colleagues, and I look forward to an ambitious agenda for 2017.
As your representatives, we are cognizant of our responsibility to ensure the quality of life you expect as residents and as taxpayers in one of the most desirous areas in the nation. Suffolk County’s beautiful beaches, fine wineries, world-class research institutions, and proximity to New York City attract visitors from throughout the world.
The benefits of living in Suffolk come at a cost, which can make it difficult for middle-class families to stretch their hard-earned tax dollars to make ends meet.
That’s why in 2017, we will continue to focus on building and sustaining an economy that will ensure middle-class families have the resources they need to thrive. Revitalization of our downtowns will remain a priority, and we will continue to explore options for transit-oriented developments that will provide access to transportation and affordable housing.
Our goal is to ensure that a quality, higher education is accessible to anyone who has a dream and that creativity will be utilized to assist in creating good-paying jobs that will provide opportunity for those young people eager to build a life in Suffolk.
New programs have already been implemented to tackle gang issues plaguing some of our communities, and we continue to find ways to deter crime and restore confidence in a police department that works for all the people.
Understanding that we are the stewards of your hard-earned tax dollars, we will create an ad hoc budget committee that will focus on cutting the county’s structural deficit while more closely scrutinizing short- and long-term borrowing and reviewing the performance of contract agencies. Every decision about every dollar will be driven by our goal to expand and strengthen Long Island’s middle class.
We will continue our efforts to create programs that support our veterans and to find ways to assist the homeless, the hungry, and the less fortunate of our great county. Every decision we make will be grounded in the betterment of the citizens we serve.
I look forward to this New Year and renewed opportunity to assist you with all your questions or concerns. Please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to working in partnership with you as together we build a stronger Suffolk in 2017.
