Message from
Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory

Welcome to the website of the Suffolk County Legislature.

I was deeply honored to be re-elected Presiding Officer by my colleagues in January, and we look forward to an ambitious 2016.

Suffolk County has some of the nation’s finest attractions – from its breathtaking shorelines and vibrant wineries to its world-class research institutions. However, our proximity to the city drives up the cost of living, making it increasingly difficult for middle class families to get by.

That’s why in 2016, our central focus will be on building an economy that will enable the middle class to thrive. We’ll work hard to revitalize our downtowns and invest in convenient transportation and affordable housing. We’ll prioritize the fight against crime and work across the aisle to restore confidence in our police department. And we’ll continue to keep quality higher education accessible to anyone who has the dream.

At the same time, we deeply respect the value of your hard-earned tax dollars, which is why last year we again balanced our budget without raising the General Fund property tax. As stewards of that money – your money – we commit to exercising the utmost fiscal responsibility in its management. Every decision about every dollar must be driven by a singular goal: to expand and strengthen Long Island’s middle class.

Every decision about every dollar must also be transparent to the citizens we serve. This website contains a wealth of information on pending legislation and committee meetings. In the coming year, you’ll also be able to view a live video stream of all of the Legislature’s General Meetings, which are held in Riverhead and Hauppauge. Thanks to the efforts of our Open Data Committee, we will continue to digitize more public records, which are accessible through a portal on this site.

If there is anything else that my staff and I can assist you with, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We look forward to working in partnership with you as together we build a stronger Suffolk in 2016.

DuWayne Gregory
Presiding Officer
